You selected Microsoft 365 in Programs and Features, clicked Change, and got a dialog with two buttons: Quick Repair and Online Repair. Neither comes with an explanation, and the difference matters. One rewrites files in place. The other removes the suite and downloads it again.

Choose wrong and you either lose an afternoon to a reinstall that fixes nothing, or keep repairing a fault the cheap option cannot reach.

Why there are two repair options

Office on Windows ships in two different installation models, and the repair dialog is a compromise between them.

Click-to-Run (Microsoft 365, and retail Office 2019, 2021 and 2024) keeps a compressed copy of the installation in a local package and streams components out of it at run time. Quick Repair can therefore rewrite individual program files from that local package with no network connection. Online Repair throws the local installation away and pulls a clean copy from Microsoft’s delivery network.

What matters more is what repair touches. It works on the program files and the Click-to-Run package. It does not touch your documents, and it does not touch your per-user profile in the registry, which is where Word, Excel and PowerPoint keep the settings they read at startup. That gap explains most “I ran repair twice and nothing changed” cases.

Repair also fixes the application, not the file. If one workbook crashes Excel while every other workbook opens normally, repair is the wrong tool. The file needs a different route, covered in Excel file won’t open.

Fix 1 — Prove it is the installation first

Narrow the fault before you commit to either button.

Open the app in safe mode: press Win+R, type winword /safe (or excel /safe, powerpnt /safe) and press Enter. Safe mode skips add-ins, the startup folder and the user template. If the problem disappears, the installation is fine, and the cause is an add-in or a template. The safe mode article walks through that cleanup, and repairing Office will not help you.

If the same fault appears in safe mode, and in more than one app, the shared installation is a fair suspect. If it fails only on particular files, the files are.

Fix 2 — Run Quick Repair

Windows 11: Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or your Office product, open the three-dot menu, choose Modify.

Windows 10 and earlier: Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select the Office entry, click Change.

Both open the same dialog. Choose Quick Repair, confirm, and let it run with Office closed. It needs no internet connection, keeps your settings, and finishes far sooner than the alternative. When it reports success, reopen the app and retest the steps that failed.

Quick Repair is worth one attempt on anything that smells like a corrupt program file: a feature that crashes on click, a dialog that renders blank, a ribbon that has lost its tabs, or “the application was unable to start correctly”. It is not worth a second attempt if the first changed nothing.

Fix 3 — Run Online Repair, and know the cost

Same dialog, second button. Online Repair uninstalls the installation, downloads a fresh copy and reinstalls it, which is why it needs a working connection and considerably more time.

You keep your documents, account, licence, OneDrive files and any templates in your own folders.

You may lose ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar customisations, some add-ins and their settings, and registry tweaks applied to the app. If you have invested in a custom QAT, export it first: File → Options → Quick Access Toolbar → Import/Export → Export all customizations.

Two cautions. Do not start it on a metered or unreliable connection: a download that fails partway can leave you with no Office at all. And if your organisation pins a specific build or update channel, an Online Repair may hand back the current build for that channel instead of the version you were on, so check with whoever manages updates before running it on a work machine.

Fix 4 — Reset the app profile when repair changes nothing

If both repairs fail in the same place, suspect the per-user profile rather than the installation.

Close the app, open regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word. Use 16.0 for Office 2016 and everything later, including Microsoft 365. Right-click the key, choose Rename, and append Old. Repeat for Excel or PowerPoint as needed. The app rebuilds the key with defaults on the next launch, and you can restore the renamed key if the copy was never the problem.

The same rebuild happens if you clear the startup folder at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP (or XLSTART for Excel) and rename Normal.dotm in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates. Both survive every repair because they live in your profile, not the installation.

Fix 5 — Mac and volume-licence installs differ

Office for Mac has no repair dialog. The supported route is uninstall and reinstall: quit every Office app, drag them from Applications to the Trash, empty it, then reinstall from your account at office.com. Documents and the ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office data folder survive, which is where AutoRecover files and templates live.

MSI-based installs — Office 2016 and 2019 volume licence, and some 2013 — show a different Change dialog with Repair and Remove. If the cached installer is gone, run setup.exe /repair from the original installation media or redeploy from your software share.

When it is not worth fixing

Stop when the same error returns after an Online Repair on a freshly reset profile. At that point you are looking at a damaged document, a Windows component such as a printer driver, or a file on a network share it cannot read. Repair touches none of those.

If the file opens on another machine, the installation is cleared and the file is the suspect. Send a copy for an assessment instead of reinstalling Office a third time; nothing is modified before you agree to it.

FAQ

Does Online Repair delete my documents? No. It removes and reinstalls program files. Files in Documents, Desktop, OneDrive and your own folders are not part of the operation.

How long does Quick Repair take? It depends on the disk and the size of the installation, but it is the shorter option because nothing is downloaded. Start it when you do not need Office for a while.

Can I repair Office without internet access? Quick Repair can, because it rebuilds from the local Click-to-Run package. Online Repair cannot, since downloading a clean copy is the entire point of it.

Will repair fix a file that will not open? Usually not. Repair restores the application. A workbook that triggers the error needs Open and Repair in the Open dialog, a separate mechanism working on the file.

Still stuck? Email the file to help@easyofficefix.com with the exact error text. You get an assessment and a flat price before any work starts.
